A former acting president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Prince Miaphen, has canvassed the immediate suspension of examinations and all academic activities at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) due to heightened insecurity around the institution and its hostels.
Miaphen in an open letter addressed to the vice chancellor of the university urged the management to prioritise the safety of students and staff amid fresh attacks and growing panic in Jos North.
He noted that recent incidents, including attacks near the university environment where lives were reportedly lost, have created widespread fear and uncertainty among students and staff.
“Of grave concern are the reported attacks that occurred on Wednesday near the university environment, where lives were lost without any visible security response,” the former NANS leader stated.
Miaphen lamented the lack of adequate and consistent security presence around the university campuses, hostels, and private residential facilities housing students, describing the situation as highly vulnerable.
He argued that human lives must take precedence over academic activities at this critical time.
“A temporary shutdown of the institution will allow relevant authorities to reassess the situation, strengthen security measures, and restore confidence before academic activities resume,” he added.
LEADERSHIP reports that the call become necessary as tension continues to grip parts of Jos following the deadly Angwan Rukuba attack and subsequent relaxation of the curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government.
Many students have expressed fears for their safety, especially around the students’ village and hostels, with reports of attacks on motorists and passers-by in areas close to the university.
