The Kano State Government has acknowledged growing public concern over the renewed presence of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as ‘Achaba’, across parts of the state, assuring residents that security agencies were already addressing the situation.
In a statement released on Sunday by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government confirmed that intelligence reports indicate that Achaba operations have resurfaced in several areas within the Kano metropolis.
Waiya added that the operators have also been noticed in some border and neighbouring communities, despite the long-standing ban on the trade.
“The Kano State Government has also received information about the infiltration of some unknown individuals operating motorcycles as commercial operators across certain communities in the metropolis,” Waiya said.
The commissioner assured that the State government has deployed appropriate measures across the 44 local government areas of the state to address any potential security threats linked to the development.
“Our competent security agencies are on top of the situation,” the statement said, adding that the state government has continued to provide all necessary support to ensure that security agencies carry out their duties effectively and professionally.
While appreciating citizens for their vigilance and cooperation, the statement urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to the relevant security agencies.
“The Government encourages citizens to remain cautious and vigilant, report all suspicious activities, and continue to cooperate with security agencies so that together we can overcome our security challenges,” Waiya added.
LEADERSHIP reports that commercial motorcycle operations have been banned in Kano for 12 years due to security and public safety concerns.
Recent sightings of ‘Achaba’ riders in some communities have sparked anxiety among residents, prompting calls for urgent government action.
