In a bid to promote excellence in the field of chemistry and its application to public health, the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) held a Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) and Induction Ceremony in Abuja with the theme “Chemistry for Better Health”.

The event brought together seasoned professionals, researchers, and newly qualified members.

Speaking with journalists, the president of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), Prof. Fanna Abdurahman, said: “What we are doing presently in the institute is about chemical safety and security, and people are constantly exposed to chemicals the create some health challenges,we are looking at the role chemistry plays in health and diseases.”

She noted that the Institute has regulatory framework that was going through the process of approval, which will give the Institute the power to look at how people use chemicals for various purposes and people who have no right to handle chemicals.

Prof. Abdurahman added that by 2024, the Bill for the regulatory framework will be passed by the National Assembly and it will give the Institute the power to enforce how chemicals are used in the country.

On his part, the Registrar and CEO of Institute, Wilford Jwalshik, said: “The MCPD is a training program where members are trained and they use the knowledge they gain to impact positively on their various organizations. So we can say it has impacted a lot on the Nigerian economy.”

The induction ceremony witnessed the welcoming of over 180 new members into the esteemed community of chartered chemists, while 25 members were inducted as Fellows of the Institute.
