Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has ignited a fierce debate across the football world, questioning whether a nation that denies entry to a FIFA-selected official should be allowed to host the World Cup.

His scathing remarks follow the United States’ refusal to grant entry to Somali referee Omar Artan, one of Africa’s most respected match officials, despite his selection by FIFA for the 2026 tournament.

Blatter, known for his controversial past, argued that referees are “fundamental to the integrity of the game” and that preventing a FIFA-appointed official from entering a host nation “raises serious questions about sporting neutrality, equal treatment, and the ability of international competitions to operate free from political interference.”

The controversy has thrown a spotlight on the delicate balance between a host nation’s sovereign responsibilities, such as national security and immigration, and FIFA’s insistence on political neutrality for its global showpiece. Critics argue that denying access to a referee undermines the World Cup’s principle as a global event, placing government policies above the tournament’s requirements.

For American sports fans, the incident sparks a broader question: who ultimately controls a World Cup – the host nation or FIFA?

Blatter’s comments suggest he believes FIFA has failed to robustly defend its principle of political neutrality in this instance. As billions watch the 2026 tournament unfold, this debate about access, neutrality, and the independence of football’s institutions is set to continue.
