JAMB Clarifies Meaning Of ‘Not Admitted’, ‘Admission In Progress’ 

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained the meanings of the “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Board gave the clarification in an explainer video shared on Thursday, urging candidates to continue checking their CAPS profiles regularly as the admission process progresses.

According to JAMB, a “Not Admitted” status does not necessarily mean that a candidate has lost the opportunity of securing admission.

Explaining the status, the Board said, “This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted.”

It therefore advised candidates whose CAPS status remains “Not Admitted” to continue checking for possible updates.

On the “Admission in Progress” status, JAMB explained that it could mean that the candidate’s institution had recommended the person for admission, but the process had not yet been concluded.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” the Board said.

JAMB added that the status could also be displayed where the head of an institution had already recommended a candidate, but the admission was still awaiting the Board’s approval or disapproval.

The Board, however, warned candidates against interpreting “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that admission had been secured.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” JAMB cautioned.

It explained that an admission recommendation could still be rejected if the candidate failed to meet the necessary requirements.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB stated.

The Board said a candidate’s CAPS status changes to “Admitted” only after JAMB has officially approved the admission offer.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” it said.

Candidates who receive the official admission offer would then be able to accept or reject it through the CAPS platform.

JAMB further explained that CAPS statuses were not static and could change at different stages of the admission process.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” the Board said.

The Board consequently advised candidates to monitor their CAPS profiles regularly and obtain admission-related information only through JAMB’s official communication channels.
