IMG 4889Former Super Eagles captains Jay Jay Okocha and John Obi Mikel have shared the unexpected stories behind the names that became synonymous with their football careers.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the Nigerian football legends explained that neither name began quite the way many fans might have assumed.

Okocha revealed that “Jay Jay” originally belonged to his younger brother, James. Growing up in a neighbourhood where several boys in his family shared the name Austin, the nickname was used to distinguish him from his brothers.

As his football career developed, the name became easier for people to pronounce than Augustine Okocha. He eventually embraced it so completely that he made “Jay Jay” part of his official name.

“So, I said I might as well adopt the name, and I put it in my passport. Yeah, it’s in my passport now. It’s officially mine,” Okocha said.

Mikel, meanwhile, said his famous surname came about through a printing error during an Under-17 tournament. He had submitted “Michael” for his jersey, but his shirt came back with “Mikel” instead.

After enjoying a successful tournament, he decided to keep the altered spelling.

“Mikel sounds better than Michael,” he said, adding that he also made the name official in his passport.
