Anthony Joshua’s return to the boxing ring is the “ultimate comeback” but also a “risk” given what he has endured over the past six months, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.
The heavyweight is set to face Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 25th July, ahead of a highly anticipated showdown against fellow Briton Tyson Fury later this year.
Joshua’s last fight was in December when he defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. This was prior to him being a passenger in a car crash in Nigeria, an accident that tragically claimed the lives of two members of his team.
The 36-year-old stated he had “taken some time to consolidate and rebuild to be ready for stepping back into the ring” against Albania’s Prenga, who boasts a record of 20 wins, all by knockout, and one loss.
“We also acknowledge the risk involved; he’s coming back from so much,” Hearn told BBC Sport.
“They’re calling this a comeback. Some might find that peculiar as it’s only six months since his last fight, but it truly is the ultimate comeback.
“It’s a comeback from the deepest of lows – not just mentally and emotionally, but physically too.
“The injuries he sustained in that crash would have prevented many from ever fighting again, and I believe the strength he has demonstrated is quite incredible.”
