JTF Troops Bust Gunrunning Syndicate, Arrest 3 Suspects, Recover Weapons In Plateau

Troops of 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) have successfully disrupted a suspected gunrunning network and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in Vom, Jos South local government area of Plateau State.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, was part of ongoing efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of action and ensure a peaceful Yuletide within the Joint Operations Area.

In a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of JTF OPEP, Major Samson Natip Zhakom, he said three suspected gunrunners were arrested during the intelligence-led raid.

Recovered items included two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles, one round of 7.62mm special ammunition, two knives, and three mobile phones.

Major Zhakom noted that while withdrawing from the area, troops faced resistance from misguided youths and women who blocked the road, fired at personnel, and threw stones at operational vehicles.

One officer sustained injuries, and a Hilux vehicle radiator and the windscreen of a gun truck were damaged. The situation was swiftly contained, and troops maintained control and discipline throughout the encounter, according to the statement.

“The arrested suspects and recovered arms and ammunition are currently in our custody for further investigation. Follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate and prevent any attempt at re-grouping,” Major Zhakom stated.

He further emphasised that the operation underscores the JTF’s resolve to dismantle criminal supply chains and prevent the proliferation of illicit weapons that threaten public safety.

Major Zhakom called on law-abiding citizens to cooperate with security personnel, warning that obstructing troops during lawful duties constitutes a serious offence and will be dealt with according to the law.

“Through vigilance, discipline, and collective responsibility, enduring peace and stability will continue to be consolidated across Plateau State and beyond,” the spokesman added.
