The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals linked to the brutal murder of six policemen in Delta State.

NPF said it made significant progress in the investigation into the tragic incident that occurred in Ughelli, Delta State on February 23, 2024, where officers on a fact-finding mission were ambushed, and February 26, 2024, where other officers on a rescue mission were also ambushed, resulting in the death of six policemen, while six others still missing in action.

The fallen officers were identified as Inspector Abe Olubunmi (IRT), Inspector Friday Irorere, Sergeant Kuden Elisha, Sergeant Akpan Aniette, Sergeant Ayere Paul, and Sergeant Ejemito Friday.

Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Saturday, disclosed that the arrests were made possible through rigorous investigative efforts.

“Following intensive investigative efforts, five suspects were initially arrested shortly after the incident, with three more apprehended at different locations,” Adejobi explained.

He further emphasised that the suspects were aiding the ongoing investigation and reassured the public of the Force’s commitment to delivering justice.

“The arrested suspects are currently in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this reprehensible act are brought to justice swiftly and decisively,” stated Adejobi, promising that the suspects would face trial with “credible evidence” once the investigation was concluded

Expressing the Force’s sorrow over the tragic loss, Adejobi said, “The Nigeria Police is deeply saddened by the heinous act of violence against our officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time.”

Adejobi reiterated the Force’s determination to bring all perpetrators to book, asserting that they would not escape punishment.

LEADERSHIP reports the incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against security operatives in Delta State, highlighted by the recent ambush that killed 17 Nigerian Army personnel.

The military suffered a grave loss on March 14, with 17 of its members, including the Commanding Officer of the 181 Amphibious Battalion and other ranks, falling victim to an ambush while on a peace mission. The brutality of their murder has drawn widespread condemnation, with President Bola Tinubu describing it as an attack on the nation and ordering a swift response to bring the culprits to justice.

The nation recently mourned these military personnel, with President Tinubu, military chiefs, and other dignitaries paying their respects at a sombre funeral service.
