JUST-IN: Fire Razes Another Lagos Automobile Market

Less than 48 hours after a fire outbreak that consumed properties and several goods worth several millions of naira at a market in Lagos Island, another fire outbreak has been reported at the Olowu Automobile Spare Parts Market, Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday.

The fire which occurred in the early hours of Thursday destroyed properties and goods worth several millions of naira.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the fire started about 02:30 hours and affected 13 shops, four warehouses and one restaurant.

Speaking on the incident, the Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the cause of the fire incident remained unknown until investigation is completed.

According to him, the chairman of the traders association in the market, Bassey Ikpendu, applauded the State Fire Service that prevented the escalation of the incident.

He said, “A fire outbreak at Olowu Automobile Spare Parts Market was recorded early this morning. The fire disaster which was reported to have started at about 0230 hours today affected 13 shops, 4 warehouses and one restaurant.

“The Commandant 9th Brigade, Ikeja met the NEMA team while he was on assessment visit to the scene. The cause of the fire cannot be determined as at now. But the Chairman of the trader association, Bassey Ikpendu, while narrating the situation applauded the efforts of the State Fire Service that prevented the escalation of the incident due to the combustible materials that were involved.”

Farinloye stated that the chairman of the traders association disclosed that no injury or death was recorded in the incident.

He added, “The Chairman narrated that one of their apprentices slept in the building and noticed the fire but by the time he got out, the fire had engulfed the building. Fire service was immediately contacted and they responded promptly. No injury or death was recorded.”
