The nation bids farewell to Onyeka Onwenu, the celebrated music icon fondly known as the ‘Elegant Stallion’, who will be laid to rest this Friday in Lagos.
Onwenu, a revered figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry, passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72.
She died at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing during an event honouring Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
The funeral service for the legendary artist will be held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, according to an announcement by her family. This will be followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.
A funeral flyer detailing the arrangements revealed that the Service of Songs is scheduled to begin from 10 am to 12 noon, while the burial ceremony will take place between 2 pm and 4pm.
Onyeka Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned several decades, during which she gained acclaim not only as a musician with numerous hit songs but also as a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. Her contributions to the arts and her advocacy for social causes have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.
She is survived by two sons.
