The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has called for a thorough investigation into the reported killing of several people in Randagi village, Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna state, following the clash between illegal miners on Tuesday.
It reported that many illegal miners were feared dead. Though the exact casualty figures were not ascertained.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Chairmanirnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), Dr Isah Muhammad, on Wednesday, the union called on the relevant authorities to carry out a prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident.
The statement stated that the circumstances surrounding the tragedy must be fully established, and anyone found responsible should be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The union urged the appropriate authorities to provide adequate medical care for those injured and necessary support for the families of those who lost their loved ones.
Muhammad, however, called on the Federal and Kaduna State Governments as well as other relevant regulatory agencies to review and strengthen the rules governing mining operations: “Mining should only be carried out after proper environmental and safety assessments and in full compliance with existing laws and recognised standards”
According to the union, “The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), on behalf of the people of Birnin Gwari, extends its heartfelt condolences to the people of Randagi following the tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, which allegedly claimed lives and left some others injured.
“We share the grief of the bereaved families and pray that Almighty Allah grants mercy to those who lost their lives, gives speedy recovery to the injured, and comforts everyone affected by this tragedy. Islam places the highest value on the sanctity of human life”
The statement reads in parts, “A credible investigation will not only honour the victims but also strengthen public confidence and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“Randagi is one of the historic communities in Birnin Gwari and has made significant contributions to agriculture and livestock production for generations. The community plays an important role in supporting food production in Kaduna State and across Northern Nigeria. Its people are widely respected for their hard work, peaceful nature and long tradition of farming and animal husbandry”
“BEPU is equally concerned about the growing mining activities in parts of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area. While we recognise that mining could be a lawful economic activity with the potential to create employment and improve livelihoods, it must be properly regulated to protect lives, public safety and the environment”
BEPU added, “Our Union has received complaints from members of the public regarding damage to public infrastructure, farmland and other community assets linked to some mining activities”, the statement said.
Efforts to reach a State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, regarding the incident were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or respond to messages
