Harry Kane etched his name into England’s football history by becoming the nation’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup as the Three Lions overcame a sluggish start to beat Panama 2-0 and finish top of Group L.
England struggled to find their rhythm for much of the contest before Jude Bellingham inspired the breakthrough in the second half.
Bellingham finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, reacting smartly to convert from Bukayo Saka’s corner and give England a deserved lead after a frustrating opening hour.
Five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider, delivering a precise cross for Kane to head home from close range.
The goal was Kane’s 11th at the World Cup, moving him ahead of Gary Lineker as England’s outright leading World Cup goalscorer. It also marked the England captain’s 82nd international goal in 117 appearances, further extending his record as the country’s all-time top scorer.
Despite the victory, England were far from convincing and once again showed defensive vulnerabilities. Manager Jarell Quansah, who had been deployed at right-back as cover for the injured Reece James, was forced off in the second half, adding to England’s growing injury concerns ahead of the knockout stage.
Bellingham was the standout performer throughout, driving England forward with energy and creativity. His goal settled the nerves before his perfectly weighted cross allowed Kane to make yet more history.
Late in the match, Jordan Henderson reached another significant milestone after coming on as a substitute. The experienced midfielder became the first player to represent England at four FIFA World Cups.
The victory ensures England progress to the last 32 as Group L winners, where they will take on DR Congo in Atlanta in a bid to continue their quest for World Cup glory.
