Kane’s Double Fires England Into Last 16 After DR Congo Scare

Captain Harry Kane produced a trademark rescue act, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes as England came from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1 and book their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Three Lions looked destined for a shock exit after B. K. Cipenga fired DR Congo ahead in the seventh minute, finishing confidently from Chancel Mbemba’s assist to stun the favourites.

England struggled to break down the resilient Congolese defence for much of the contest, with frustration growing after Jude Bellingham was booked before the interval, while Noah Sadiki also entered the referee’s notebook.

With time running out, Kane stepped up when his country needed him most. The England skipper headed home Anthony Gordon’s cross in the 75th minute to restore parity and breathe life into his side’s World Cup campaign.

Just 11 minutes later, the Bayern Munich striker struck again, once more converting Gordon’s delivery to complete a dramatic turnaround and send England into the next round.

The late double spared England from one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and underlined Kane’s reputation as the nation’s talisman on the biggest stage.

Despite the defeat, DR Congo won widespread admiration for a disciplined and courageous display that pushed one of the tournament favourites to the brink.

England will now face Mexico in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
