Kano State House of Assembly has passed into law a N1.47 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, increasing the initial proposal submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf by N109.7 billion.

The appropriation bill, totaling N1,477,829,666,131, was approved on Monday during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, following consideration at the Committee of the Whole and its third reading by the Clerk of the House, Bashir Diso.

Governor Yusuf had earlier presented a N1,368,127,929,271 budget proposal tagged “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” aimed at consolidating ongoing projects and initiating new interventions across critical sectors of the state economy.

Briefing journalists after the session, the Majority Leader of the House, Husseini Lawan, said the upward review was informed by improved revenue projections, particularly from federal allocations and Value Added Tax (VAT).

He explained that the approved budget comprises N1.048 trillion for capital expenditure, representing about 75 per cent of the total outlay, while N429 billion was allocated to recurrent expenditure, accounting for 25 per cent.

According to him, the education and health sectors received the largest shares, reflecting the Assembly’s priority for human capital development. Education was allocated about 30 per cent of the budget—above the UNESCO benchmark—while the health sector received 16 per cent, exceeding the Abuja Declaration target.

Lawan disclosed that the education sector allocation was increased by N19 billion from the N405 billion initially proposed by the governor to about N425 billion, while the health sector also received an additional N2.59 billion.

He added that the overall increment of N109.7 billion was driven by anticipated increases in federal allocation, petroleum revenue, VAT receipts following recent tax reforms, as well as adjustments in internally generated revenue projections.

Earlier, the Assembly held a valedictory session in honour of two lawmakers—Aminu Sa’ad (Ungogo) and Sarki Aliyu Danaji (Kano Municipal)—who died in active service on December 24, 2025.

Speaker Falgore described their deaths as a grievous loss to the Assembly and the state, while members paid glowing tributes, noting their dedication, commitment to public service and contributions to democratic governance in Kano State.
