The Kano State Government has launched a new solar-powered borehole initiative aimed at addressing persistent water shortages and expanding access to potable water across the state.

Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim noted that Governor Abba Yusuf has approved the installation of 166 solar-powered boreholes as part of an emergency intervention targeting water-stressed communities.

According to the commissioner, the project underscores the administration’s commitment to improving water supply and enhancing the wellbeing of residents. He explained that the initiative is expected to deliver approximately 4.15 million litres of water daily, benefiting an estimated 830,000 people across the state.

He further stated that each borehole is designed to supply about 25,000 litres of water per day, serving roughly 5,000 residents in affected communities.

The commissioner described the project as the first phase of a broader plan, adding that more solar-powered boreholes would be deployed in additional locations as the programme expands.

According to him, the intervention forms part of immediate measures to cushion the impact of water scarcity while the government pursues long-term solutions in the sector.

“The administration remains committed to providing practical and sustainable solutions to the water needs of the people. This initiative marks a significant step toward improving access to clean water and strengthening public infrastructure,” Hashim said.

He also revealed that rehabilitation works on the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants have commenced following the award of contracts approved by the governor.

The projects, he noted, are expected to boost water production and improve distribution within Kano metropolis and adjoining areas.

Hashim added that the government is adopting a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the water sector through infrastructure upgrades, expansion of supply systems and the adoption of alternative energy solutions to ensure sustainability.

The state government, however, urged residents to safeguard public water facilities and promote responsible water usage to ensure the success and longevity of the initiative.
