The Kano State Government has concluded arrangements to construct 1,800 housing units across 36 rural local government areas (LGAs) in the State as part of its drive to expand access to decent and affordable housing.
Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ibrahim Yakubu, disclosed this while receiving a delegation from the Jigawa State Ministry of Land, Housing, Urban Development and Regional Planning, in his office. He said the initiative aligned with Governor Abba Yusuf’s campaign promise to deliver modern, functional housing estates in every local government area.
According to him, each of the 36 LGAs will receive 50 housing units equipped with essential amenities, including schools, police outposts, clinics, water supply and electricity. The commissioner added that the goal was to ensure that the housing estates meet international standards of livability and sustainability.
Arc. Adamu explained that while the Ministry of Housing will oversee the construction of the buildings, the Ministry of Rural and Community Development will provide access roads, drainage systems and other complementary facilities to enhance the structural quality of the estates.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director, Public Enlightenment, Adamu Abdullahi, the commissioner revealed that more than 100 developer firms have submitted proposals to partner with the state government on the projects, noting that 60 firms—both local and international—have been shortlisted for further consideration.
Earlier, the leader of the Jigawa delegation and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Surveyor Abdullahi Hassan, said they were in Kano on a study tour to learn from the state’s evolving housing and urban development model. He commended Governor Yusuf’s infrastructural reforms, describing them as transformative and worthy of emulation.
Hassan urged the Kano State government to maintain the long-standing brotherly ties between the two states as they continued to share experiences and collaborate on development projects.
