Katsina State government has completed 32 of 66 Small Town Water Supply Projects across the state.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda disclosed this while commissioning the Tsagero Small Town Water Supply Scheme in Rimi local government area.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding access to potable water across the state, describing the project as a major step toward improving public health, sanitation, economic productivity and the overall quality of life of residents.

He noted that access to clean and reliable water is a fundamental necessity and a critical component of sustainable development, stressing that the Tsagero scheme would provide lasting benefits to households, schools, healthcare facilities and businesses in the community and surrounding areas.

Providing the technical background of the project, the Director of the Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (STOWASSA), Alhaji  Idris Isyaka, said the scheme was designed to provide sustainable and reliable water supply to Tsagero and neighbouring communities.

According to him, the project consists of 10 boreholes for water production, a 300,000-litre ground reservoir for water storage, and a 100,000-litre elevated overhead tank mounted on a 9.3-metre tower to ensure adequate pressure for water distribution.

He added that 30 public standpipes were constructed across various parts of the community to guarantee easy access to safe drinking water for residents.

“This is not just the commissioning of a water system; it is the commissioning of hope, dignity, better health, productivity and a brighter future for the people of Tsagero,” he said.

The STOWASSA boss commended Governor Radda for his unwavering support to the agency and his commitment to improving access to water supply services in rural and semi-urban communities across Katsina State.

Governor Radda said water sector development remains one of the highest priorities of his administration because of its direct impact on health, education, gender equality and economic growth.

He disclosed that the state government is sustaining water production and distribution through regular provision of diesel and treatment chemicals, while also implementing major infrastructure projects, including the Zobe Water Supply Project Phase 1B, rehabilitation of Ajiwa Dam facilities, upgrading of the Barhim Reservoir and reforms aimed at automating Water Board operations.

The governor further revealed that his administration awarded contracts for the construction of 66 Small Town Water Supply Schemes across several local government areas, including Katsina, Funtua, Baure, Kankara, Kafur, Daura, Charanchi, Batagarawa, Matazu and Faskari.

“I am pleased to inform you that 32 of these schemes have been completed and are either operational or ready for commissioning,” he said.

He also highlighted ongoing sanitation interventions, including the construction of household sanitation facilities and latrines as well as the installation of water treatment plants in selected communities.

Governor Radda called on community leaders, residents and relevant stakeholders to take ownership of the Tsagero Water Supply Scheme by protecting the facilities, preventing vandalism and ensuring proper maintenance to guarantee long-term sustainability.

The governor commended the Ministry of Water Resources, STOWASSA, contractors, consultants, local government authorities, traditional institutions and community leaders for their contributions to the successful execution of the project.

He subsequently declared the Tsagero Small Town Water Supply Scheme open for public use, describing the project as a symbol of development, partnership and the government’s determination to bring essential services closer to the grassroots.

Earlier, the commissioner for water resources, Hon. Ayuba Sulubawa urged members of the community to take ownership of the project, tasking them to protect the facility for the benefit of all people.
