Katsina State government has mobilised additional security forces to Malumfashi local government area following an attack on the Unguwan Mantau community, where 13 worshippers were shot dead inside a mosque.

The incident happened during the morning (Fajr) prayers yesterday when the gunmen stormed the mosque and opened fire on the worshippers.

In a statement, the commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu, described the assault as “a reprisal attack carried out by criminal elements” after residents had earlier confronted the bandits.

“Two days ago, the people of Unguwan Mantau laid an ambush against the bandits, killed many of them, rescued abducted victims from Ruwan Sanyi village, and recovered three motorcycles and two AK-47 rifles,” he explained.

Dr Mu’azu said security forces had been deployed immediately to the area.

“The Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base and the Nigerian Police have moved in to track the perpetrators. During the rainy season, these bandits often hide under crops to launch attacks, but we are determined to bring them to justice,” he stated.

While commending the community’s courage, the commissioner assured residents of the government’s full support.

“We salute the gallantry of the people of Unguwan Mantau and reaffirm our commitment to protecting all communities across the state,” he said.

He also extended condolences to the bereaved families. “The government of Katsina State stands with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time. We will not relent until peace is fully restored.”
