Kebbi State government has made progress in restoring normal water supply to the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, following a major overhaul of the local waterworks.
The breakthrough comes after Governor Nasir Idris, swiftly constituted a taskforce committee, chaired by secretary to the state government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, to address the issue.
The committee mobilised state water board engineers to Dukku waterworks, where a major burst had caused significant damage. “The committee has worked tirelessly to ensure the speedy resuscitation of the waterworks,” Bala-Tafida said.
The permanent secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Alhaji Isah Arzika, said pumping machines were sourced and deployed to evacuate flooded areas, and the six intake machines are now visible and no longer submerged. “We are confident that the machines will function properly after drying and testing,” Arzika said.
The general manager of the Water Board, Engr. Zayyanu Shehu, promised that water supply would be restored within days and appealed to to the residents for patience.
