The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has disconnected the Aliko Dangote University in Wudil, Kano State from power supply due to an outstanding debt of N248 million.
KEDCO’s Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf, disclosed this development during a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
Yusuf explained that the measure was taken as a last resort after the university had only managed to pay N20 million out of the total debt.
“We had no alternative but to cut off the power supply,” Yusuf stated, adding that, “Power will only be restored if the university makes a substantial payment.”
He emphasised the significant costs KEDCO incurs in purchasing power from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), underscores the necessity of revenue collection efforts to sustain its operations.
“I urge all institutions, including federal and state entities, as well as agencies, to settle their outstanding debts,” Yusuf pleaded, noting, “We have measures in place to ensure the collection of monies owed to us.”
The disconnection of power has caused disruptions at the University, affecting both academic and administrative activities.
The university administration is yet to comment on the situation.
