The Okun Development Association (ODA) has expressed confidence in the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), describing his track record of discipline and adherence to due process as key to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral credibility.
In a statement issued in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, ODA president-general, Akenson Rotimi, declared the association’s unwavering support for Amupitan as he leads the electoral body.
The group described his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a clear recognition of competence, integrity and merit, noting that it reflected a commitment to placing capable individuals in positions of national responsibility.
According to the association, the confidence reposed in Amupitan is not only an honour to Okunland and Kogi State but also a source of pride for Nigerians who believe in rewarding integrity and capacity in public service.
“His public and academic record reflect uncommon discipline, fidelity to due process, and abiding respect for institutions,” the statement noted.
ODA emphasized that Amupitan has consistently demonstrated the temperament, intellectual depth, and moral courage required to handle sensitive national responsibilities with fairness and firmness, expressing optimism that these qualities will define his leadership at INEC.
The association further described him as a scholar who has mentored generations of Nigerians now contributing across key sectors, and as an administrator known for building enduring institutional systems.
It stressed that his commitment to strong and impartial institutions aligns with the urgent need to deepen public trust in the electoral process.
“Under his leadership, the Commission will discharge its constitutional mandate without fear or favour, thereby strengthening the credibility of Nigeria’s elections,” the group stated.
While acknowledging that the office of INEC Chairman often attracts intense public scrutiny, ODA called on political actors, stakeholders, and citizens to exercise restraint and utilize established legal and institutional channels for addressing grievances.
“We urge Nigerians to grant Prof. Amupitan the calm and institutional space required to serve with neutrality, courage, and effectiveness,” the statement added.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to national unity, democratic stability, and the success of the current administration, expressing confidence that Amupitan will bring honour, credibility, and transparency to his office.
ODA also extended appreciation to President Tinubu for what it described as a well-considered appointment, and called on Nigerians to support the new INEC chairman with goodwill and prayers as he undertakes his responsibilities.
