Ilafin-Isanlu in Yagba East local government area of Kogi State has received a furnished and equipped Mathematics and ICT Centre from the family of the late Chief Joseph Owoeye, a renowned mathematician born in Kogi.
According to them, the donation is in line with their determination to continue to encourage the teaching and learning of mathematics at the secondary school level.
The family donated the Mathematics and ICT Centre to the Isanlu Victory College, Ilafin-Isanlu, in honour of the late educationist.
A son of the deceased, Mr Peter Owoeye, presented the Chief Joseph Olarenwaju Owoeye Mathematics and ICT Centre to the principal of the Isanlu Victory College and the community.
He said an educational foundation would also be established to continue Pa Owoeye’s vision of education.
Owoeye added that the foundation would partner with federal government and Kogi State on mathematics quiz competition.
One of the brains behind the establishment of the centre to immortalise Pa Owoeye, Dr Giotane Tambawa, said the children and their associates put the project together to honour the deceased who lived all his life serving humanity, stressing that Papa had touched many lives and his visions must not be allowed to die.
Tambawa disclosed that, though he is from Plateau State, he has learnt a lot from the good legacies laid by the renowned educationist. He added that in partnership with the children, the group felt that Pa Owoeye must be immortalised for his contributions.
The Agabana of Isanlu Kingdom and chairman of Yagba East Local Government Area Traditional Council, Moses Babatunde Etombi, said Pa Owoeye was greatly missed by the people of the entire Isanlu land and Ilafin community in particular for his selfless service.
The monarch assured the donors that preparations were in top gear to hire more security personnel to ensure the safety of the edifice, computers, and other facilities for the benefit of the college students and the entire Ilafin-Isanlu community.
The rector of Kogi Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Usman, also pledged to immortalise Pa Joseph Owoeye for his immense contribution to the educational development and growth of the state-owned institution.
Usman, who spoke during the Service of Songs in honour of the departed soul, pointed out that Baba Owoeye was one of the greatest founding fathers of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.
The rector eulogised the deceased for his immense contributions to the growth and development of the institution during its formative years, noting that when he came on board as the rector of the Polytechnic, he heard many of the good legacies left by the deceased.
