Library Association Rejects Call To Divert Funds

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) has rejected recent calls to redirect funds raised for the completion of the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) headquarters, warning that such a move would harm the nation’s intellectual and educational development.

In a statement on Thursday, NLA President Dr. Lawal Umar responded to remarks by Chief Olabode George, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, who reportedly urged First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu to channel donations for the library to “hungry Nigerians.”

While acknowledging the economic hardships facing many citizens, the NLA argued that diverting resources from the long-delayed library project would weaken Nigeria’s intellectual infrastructure.

“The National Library of Nigeria is not a luxury; it is a national imperative,” Dr. Umar said.

He emphasized that the library preserves the country’s intellectual and cultural heritage, supports research and education, and promotes literacy and lifelong learning.

According to the NLA, a fully operational National Library would provide a knowledge base critical to addressing poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment, enabling innovation and evidence-based policymaking.

The association also cautioned against politicizing national development projects, noting that short-term relief cannot replace long-term investments in knowledge infrastructure.

The NLA commended Senator Tinubu’s fundraising appeal for the library, describing it as a forward-looking initiative that demonstrates commitment to sustainable national growth.

“Diverting these funds may provide temporary relief, but completing the library will empower generations and build the intellectual capital needed to tackle challenges like hunger and poverty sustainably,” the statement said.

The association urged the Federal Government, private sector, development partners, and the public to continue supporting the completion of the National Library headquarters, underscoring that a well-funded library is essential for building a progressive and competitive nation.
