Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Barcelona captain Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent.
The 27-year-old Uruguay international is expected to join Liverpool’s squad this weekend as manager Arne Slot looks to strengthen his defensive options.
Araújo’s arrival would help address a growing shortage at the back following Ibrahima Konaté’s departure to Real Madrid on a free transfer, while injuries to Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and Jérémy Jacquet have further reduced Liverpool’s defensive options.
The versatile defender, who can also operate at right-back, joined Barcelona in 2018 and has made more than 200 appearances for the Catalan giants.
He has won three La Liga titles during his time at the club but slipped down the pecking order last season, making just 11 league starts.
Despite his reduced role, Araújo remains contracted to Barcelona until 2031 and is regarded as an experienced defender capable of providing Liverpool with both versatility and depth.
The proposed loan deal would give Liverpool an opportunity to assess the Uruguay international in the Premier League before deciding whether to trigger the option for a permanent transfer.
