Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has stated that love and marriage remain sacred institutions, arguing that they only fail when individuals enter relationships with hidden financial motives.

In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, the actor criticised the growing trend of treating romantic partnerships as a means of financial gain. He explained that while love is naturally beautiful, problems arise when a partner enters a relationship with undisclosed material expectations.

“Love and marriage are not scams, but there are a few people who are using relationships as a meal ticket. That is where it becomes a deception,” Ike said. He urged individuals to be sincere, suggesting it is better to ask for financial help directly rather than disguising financial interest as romance.

The actor also addressed the influence of social media on modern marriages, advising couples not to model their homes after relationships they see online. He emphasised that every marriage is unique and requires patience, understanding, communication, and mutual support through life’s challenges.

Ike concluded by stating that failed marriages showcased on social media do not represent everyday reality, urging people to focus on building their own homes with honesty and commitment rather than comparing them to others.
