Arsenal forward Noni Madueke has lauded Nigeria international Ola Aina as the most formidable opponent he has ever faced, praising the Nottingham Forest defender’s impressive strength and composure with the ball.
A key figure for the Nigerian national team, Aina has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dependable full-backs since joining Forest in 2023.
His performances last season were crucial in the club’s successful push for European qualification, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa League and revitalising the atmosphere at the City Ground.
Despite a brief spell on the sidelines due to injury earlier this season, Aina swiftly regained his starting position, underscoring his undeniable importance to the team.
Madueke, who moved from Chelsea to Arsenal last summer, has directly competed against Aina on five occasions, securing just one victory in those encounters. This record highlights the Nigeria’s tenaciousness in one-on-one duels. Their most recent clash was a tense goalless draw between Arsenal and Forest last month.
In an interview shared on X, Madueke unhesitatingly named Aina when asked about the toughest full-back he has encountered.
“I’m going to give Ola Aina his flowers. Played against him a couple of times. He’s mad strong, mad physical,” the former Chelsea player stated. “But, he’s also good on the ball. Some people probably wouldn’t give him the credit for that.”
This combination of resilience and finesse truly distinguishes Aina. While his defensive prowess often captures attention, those who observe closely recognise his comfort in possession and his ability to transition into midfield when necessary.
Despite an injury-affected campaign, the 27-year-old has still made 16 appearances across all competitions this season. Upon his return to fitness, manager Sean Dyche promptly reinstated him to the starting XI, a clear testament to the trust placed in him.
Nottingham Forest are still vying for progress in the Europa League and must avoid defeat against Fenerbahçe in the second leg of their round of 16 play-off tie to keep their hopes alive.
Domestically, Forest currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, a mere two points above the relegation zone. Survival is far from assured, and the coming weeks could significantly influence not only the club’s future but also that of several key players.
