Harry Maguire has reaffirmed his commitment to Manchester United by signing a new one-year contract, with the option of a further extension, in a deal that reportedly includes a reduction in wages.
The 33-year-old defender, whose previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season, has opted to remain at Old Trafford, extending a stay that began with his then world-record £80 million move from Leicester City in 2019.
Since joining United, Maguire has made 266 appearances, winning the League Cup in the 2022–23 campaign and the FA Cup the following season. Despite facing periods of criticism and losing the captaincy in 2023, he has remained a resilient figure within the squad.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour,” Maguire said. “I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club and continue creating special moments with our supporters.”
His career at United has seen fluctuating fortunes. After being handed the captaincy by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he later fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag and was linked with a move to West Ham United.
However, Maguire chose to stay and has since experienced a resurgence, particularly under interim manager Michael Carrick, starting regularly and reasserting his importance to the team.
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised the defender’s professionalism and leadership, highlighting his value to a developing squad.
With experienced figures such as Casemiro expected to depart, Maguire’s decision to remain is seen as a stabilising move as the club continues its rebuild.
