Former senate leader, Ali Ndume, has urged the federal government to prioritise national security over political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections, following Monday’s explosions in Maiduguri.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, made the call in a statement issued to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.
He appealed to the administration of President Bola Tinubu to focus on governance, particularly the safety and welfare of citizens, amid rising insecurity in the North-East and other parts of the country.
“The people that will vote are dying,” Ndume said, expressing grave concern over continued attacks by insurgents and bandits.
The lawmaker called on the President to go beyond issuing press statements and take decisive action to address the security challenges confronting the nation.
“A lot of people are still missing from the Ngoshe massacre. Perpetrators of the
Maiduguri bombings must be arrested,” Ndume said, while urging security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering and operations to forestall future attacks.
He also sympathised with the Borno State Government, residents of Maiduguri, and families of victims affected by the explosions.
Ndume further criticised what he described as an insufficient response from the Presidency, insisting that more visible leadership was needed at a time of national distress.
“If President Tinubu can’t visit Borno, he should send Vice President Kashim Shettima to assure Nigerians he cares about their plights,” he added.
The explosions in Maiduguri have heightened concerns over renewed insecurity in the North-East, with stakeholders calling for urgent and coordinated action to curb the menace.
