As interest in urban greenery and landscaping continues to rise across Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, horticulture is emerging as a viable source of income for residents seeking alternative revenue streams.

Experts say that with proper knowledge and creativity, horticulture can generate steady income through plant cultivation, landscaping services, and maintenance contracts for homes and businesses.

Horticulture, which involves the cultivation of ornamental plants, flowers, vegetables, and trees, is gaining traction in urban centers where property owners and corporate organizations increasingly invest in beautification and environmental sustainability.

A Lagos-based horticulturist, Tunde Smith, explained that demand for professional gardening and landscaping services has grown significantly in recent years, particularly among homeowners and hospitality businesses.

“Horticulture is no longer just a hobby. In Lagos, it has become a serious business because many people want their homes and offices to look attractive and eco-friendly,” Smith said.

He advised that individuals interested in horticulture can begin on a small scale by growing ornamental plants such as palms, crotons, and flowering shrubs, which are widely used in landscaping.

“Plant nurseries are one of the most profitable entry points into the horticulture business. Many ornamental plants multiply quickly, and within months you can start selling them to homeowners, offices, and event planners,” he said.

Smith noted that landscaping services offer another lucrative revenue stream. Property developers, corporate offices, and private homeowners often hire professionals to design and maintain gardens.

“Landscaping projects often bring higher income because clients pay for both the plants and the design expertise. Some projects involve transforming empty spaces into green environments with lawns, flowers, and decorative plants,” he said.

Private homes also present consistent income opportunities. Many affluent households in Lagos hire gardeners to maintain lawns, trim hedges, and water plants regularly.

“In many Estates, homeowners prefer professionals who can maintain their gardens. A horticulturist can manage multiple homes and earn monthly maintenance fees,” Smith explained.

Hotels and hospitality businesses represent another significant market. Hotels rely on greenery to enhance their environment and attract guests. “Hotels want beautiful surroundings because it improves the guest experience. Many require regular plant replacement, lawn maintenance, and landscaping upgrades,” he said.

He further noted that hotel contracts often provide long-term, stable income for horticulturists.

Horticulturists can also supply plants to interior decorators, event planners, and property developers.

“Decorative plants are in high demand at weddings, corporate events, and exhibitions. Event planners often rent potted plants to beautify venues,” he said.

Another emerging opportunity is horticulture training and consultancy. Experienced horticulturists can organize workshops to teach residents how to grow plants and maintain home gardens.

“With more people interested in home gardening, training sessions and consultations can also provide additional income,” Smith added.

He advised aspiring horticulturists to invest time in learning plant care techniques and understanding environmental conditions.

“Plants require proper watering, soil management, and pest control. Anyone entering the business must understand how to nurture different plant species,” he said.

Smith also emphasized patience, noting that profits may take time to materialize.

“Like farming, horticulture requires patience. But once your nursery grows and you build relationships with clients, the income becomes consistent,” he said.

With growing awareness of environmental sustainability and aesthetic landscaping, horticulture is increasingly becoming a profitable venture for urban residents looking to turn their passion for plants into a thriving business.
