A 27-year-old man, Yayu Musa has been arrested by local vigilante group for allegedly attacking and killing his mother-in-law in Kogi State.
The incidence occurred on Friday at about 8 pm in Olla Community of Omala local government area of Kogi State.
A source from the community revealed that the suspect tricked his mother-in-law, a 50-year-old woman identified as Atayi Abdul that some people were harvesting her crops on her farm.
However, on arrival at the farm, the son-in-law attacked his mother-in-law with a machete, killing her on the farm.
A video recorded by the local vigilante who discovered the body of the victim, showed that the assailant butchered his victim’s body after killing her in cold blood.
The vigilante group thereafter launched a manhunt for the suspected killer and eventually apprehended him at a neighbouring community where he escaped after committing the crime.
The suspect confessed to committing the crime, citing the deceased’s threat to give out his wife, Umi Idris, to another man, due to her current difficulty to get pregnant.
The suspect whose confessional statement was recorded in video said, “I was angered into killing my mother-in-law because she wanted to deprive me from marrying her daughter”.
He said, “The woman (victim) gave me her daughter Umi Idris to marry, and I have spent all my hard-earned resources in caring for my wife. But my mother in-law insisted that she will give my wife to another man to marry simply because my wife has difficulty to become pregnant. And I have spent so much money to ensure my wife conceive to no avail.
“At a point, I had to sell my motorcycle and made serious financial commitment in seeking medical solutions for my wife to get pregnant. But in spite of all that I did, my mother-in-law kept telling me I am not man enough to marry her daughter, and that she will give my wife to any other capable man to marry.
“So that was why I got angry, and I love my wife. I don’t want to see her marry another person while I’m still alive.”
When contacted, the Kogi State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Ayah not be reached on the incident.
However, a top police officer who craved secrecy confirmed the incident.
