Manchester City will put their perfect Premier League start on the line on Sunday (Today), when they face Manchester United in the 199th Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

For City boss Enzo Maresca, it is a first taste of this fierce rivalry, while United manager Michael Carrick will be aiming to continue his strong record against the club’s noisy neighbours.

City arrive at Old Trafford having won all three of their Premier League fixtures to sit on nine points. Their only blemish this season was a Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Maresca’s first match in charge, but since then they have won four consecutive games in all competitions, including a 2-0 away victory at FC Porto to open their Champions League campaign.

United, by contrast, have had a mixed start. Carrick’s side have taken four points from their opening three league games, beginning with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Hull City, followed by a 5-2 thrashing of Ipswich Town and a 2-2 draw at Everton in which they conceded late.

They did bounce back in midweek with a confidence-boosting 4-0 rout of Champions League debutants Sabah FK at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have been potent in attack, registering the most shots and the highest expected goals tally in the division so far, but they have conceded exactly twice in every league match.

Both teams have injury concerns ahead of the derby, with seven players potentially missing. United will be without Carlos Baleba, Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton, while left-back Luke Shaw remains a doubt after being given an additional rest day.

City’s only absentee is winger Jeremy Doku, who has been sidelined with a calf issue since the Community Shield, while Nico O’Reilly has been declared fully available after a back problem.

Tactically, the derby presents a clash between United’s attacking intent and City’s patient, late-game surges. Carrick may start Benjamin Sesko as a focal point to pin City’s defenders, allowing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to exploit space.

For City, the three attacking positions behind Erling Haaland remain difficult to predict, with Maresca rotating between Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Phil Foden and others.

History offers United encouragement: they have lost just one of the last six derbies and won the most recent meeting 2-0 at Old Trafford in January, the result that began Carrick’s permanent tenure.

With United’s defensive vulnerabilities and City’s habit of striking late, a high-scoring affair is plausible, but the tactical discipline of both managers could produce a tighter contest.

What is certain is that Old Trafford will be at its most febrile for the visit of Man City, and the result could set the tone for both clubs’ seasons.
