A man, Mr. Ben Atonko, has petitioned the inspector-general of police (IGP) over the alleged assault of his brother, Mr. Terver Atonko, by staff members of Hammakopp Consortium Ltd in Okija, Anambra State.
In a letter dated October 6, 2025, Atonko alleged that his brother was attacked and injured after a disagreement with a staff member of the company over the payment for a drainage evacuation job carried out on September 26, 2025.
According to the petitioner, Terver was invited by a staff member of the company, identified as Mr Franklin Odira Onyia, to clear a clogged water channel on the firm’s premises.
Onyia reportedly released N100,000 for work materials and verbally agreed to pay the balance upon completion of the job.
Atonko stated that after the work was completed, Onyia refused to pay and later assaulted his brother.
The victim was said to have sustained deep cuts on the head and hand before being taken to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, where he was allegedly abandoned by company staff.
He further claimed that his brother was left without food or proper medical attention until his arrival at the hospital on October 1, 2025.
“My brother now lies in pain at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital. His left ear continually discharges water, and I bear the cost of his treatment,” Atonko stated.
He said attempts to obtain clarification from the company’s management were unsuccessful, as officials repeatedly denied him access to speak with those involved.
Atonko added that his report to the Okija Police Division had not yielded any results, alleging that the company might be enjoying protection from some police officers.
When contacted, a female staff member of Hammakopp Consortium Ltd, who reportedly took the victim to the hospital, denied any assault, claiming that the victim was injured after being swept away by stormwater during the job.
Efforts to reach the company’s management and Onyia for comments were unsuccessful, as calls to their known phone numbers were not answered. Atonko urged the IGP to order a full investigation into the incident and ensure justice.
