Margaret Lawrence University has matriculated 272 students across its Abuja and Delta campuses for the 2025/2026 academic session.
At the ceremony yesterday, the pro-chancellor and founder of the university, Paul Odili, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the event and the admission of the new students into the academic community.
Odili said the occasion brought him great joy, noting that the students’ matriculation reflected the steady growth of the university and the continued confidence parents have placed in the institution.
“My biggest takeaway is being satisfied with the success of the event and the fact that everything went well. The children have been matriculated, and everybody who came, I believe, is happy to see what God has done here. For me, it is joy. I am happy,” he said.
He also used the opportunity to encourage parents seeking quality education for their children to consider the university, assuring them of the institution’s commitment to developing well-rounded graduates prepared for the future.
Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Ernest B. Izevbigie, said the matriculation ceremony marks a significant stage in students’ academic journey, formally marking their entry into the university system.
“In every university, there are two very important ceremonies. The first is matriculation, which marks entry into the university, and the last is convocation or graduation, which marks exit from the university.
You must enter before you can exit,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that the university has a strict policy on the use of smartphones on campus by students to enhance academic focus.
According to him, while students are allowed to communicate with their families using basic mobile phones, smartphones are restricted to minimise distractions.
“Using a smartphone can be a distraction. Our students can communicate with their parents using regular phones to make calls and send messages, but they are not allowed to use smartphones while on campus because we want them to focus on their studies,” he said.
He added that the institution has established disciplinary measures for violations of the rule.
Also speaking at the event, popular Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, known as AY, emphasised the importance of education in shaping young people’s futures and urged the newly admitted students to take their academic journey seriously.
“Education is our passport to the future. Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. From what I have seen, the students are ready and good to go,” he said.
