South Africa midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has expressed confidence that Thalente Mbatha can rise to the occasion as Bafana Bafana prepare for their decisive FIFA World Cup Group A encounter against South Korea.

South Africa head into Wednesday’s clash in Monterrey knowing that only a victory will keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive after collecting just one point from their opening two matches.

Head coach Hugo Broos has been dealt a significant blow with influential midfielder Teboho Mokoena suspended after accumulating yellow cards in the opening fixtures.

The absence of Mokoena, arguably South Africa’s most influential player at the tournament, is expected to open the door for Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha to assume a greater role in midfield.

Mofokeng believes the 26-year-old possesses the qualities required to help South Africa remain competitive in a must-win contest.

According to the young winger, Mbatha’s ability to operate from box to box, break up opposition attacks and create opportunities for teammates makes him a valuable asset in the middle of the park.

Mbatha has enjoyed a rapid rise on the international stage since making his senior debut in September 2024 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda. His performances for Orlando Pirates have also enhanced his reputation as one of the Premier Soccer League’s most dependable midfielders.

Mokoena himself has backed Mbatha to step up, insisting South Africa possess sufficient quality within the squad to cope with his absence.

The suspended midfielder has been instrumental for Bafana Bafana at the tournament, recording a team-high number of touches in the draw against Czechia before scoring a crucial late equaliser from the penalty spot.

With qualification hanging in the balance, South Africa will be hoping Mbatha can deliver another influential display and help guide the team to a vital victory over South Korea.
