Nico Paz has handed Argentina a timely boost ahead of the FIFA World Cup after returning to full training, while captain Lionel Messi could make his comeback in Tuesday’s friendly against Iceland.

The 21-year-old Como midfielder completed his first training session with the reigning world champions on Sunday after recovering from the knee injury that has kept him sidelined since 10 May.

Paz suffered a knock to his left knee during club duty and has spent the past month undergoing rehabilitation. His return comes as a major positive for head coach Lionel Scaloni, who continues to fine-tune his squad ahead of Argentina’s title defence in North America.

The youngster is now expected to be available for Argentina’s final warm-up fixture against Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, on Tuesday.

Scaloni also welcomed the return of experienced right-backs Nahuel Molina and Gonzalo Montiel, both of whom took part in full training after overcoming injury concerns.

The biggest focus, however, remains on Messi. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is making steady progress in his recovery from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring and could feature for the first time since joining the national team camp.

Messi was an unused substitute as Argentina defeated Honduras 2-0 in a friendly on Saturday, with the coaching staff opting not to take any risks with their captain.

The 38-year-old has not played since 25 May when he sustained the muscular issue during his final appearance for Inter Miami before linking up with the national team.

While optimism is growing over Messi’s fitness, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and midfielder Leandro Paredes continue to train separately as they recover from their respective injuries.
