Algeria have extended the contract of head coach Vladimir Petkovic until July 2028, reinforcing their faith in the Bosnian-born tactician just days before the Desert Foxes begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against defending champions Argentina.

The Algerian Football Federation announced the new agreement shortly before the squad departed for the United States, where they will complete the final phase of their preparations for the tournament.

Petkovic’s previous deal was due to expire after the World Cup, but federation officials have moved swiftly to secure his long-term future following a remarkable revival of the national team since his appointment in February 2024.

The contract extension also covers several members of his backroom staff, including assistant coach Davide Morandi, goalkeeping coach Guido Nanni and fitness trainer Paolo Rongoni.

In a statement, the federation described the decision as a reflection of its “stability and confidence in the work accomplished” under Petkovic’s leadership.

Algeria will launch their Group J campaign against Argentina at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, before taking on Jordan and Austria in their remaining group matches.

The 62-year-old coach has transformed the fortunes of the Desert Foxes after succeeding a period of disappointment that saw the nation miss both the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.

Under Petkovic, Algeria have compiled an impressive record of 21 victories, four draws and only three defeats in 28 matches.

His tenure has also delivered qualification for the 2026 World Cup and a vastly improved performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Algeria reached the quarter-finals after suffering consecutive group-stage exits in 2021 and 2023.

The team’s resurgence has been reflected in the FIFA rankings, with Algeria climbing from 43rd to 28th globally and from seventh to fourth among African nations.

Those achievements convinced federation officials that Petkovic deserved a renewed mandate regardless of what happens at the World Cup.

The announcement follows one of Algeria’s most encouraging results under the Swiss-based coach, a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Rotterdam that boosted confidence ahead of the tournament.

The Desert Foxes are scheduled to face Bolivia in their final pre-World Cup friendly on Wednesday before turning their full attention to Argentina.

By resolving uncertainty over the coaching position before the tournament begins, Algeria hope to create an environment of stability and focus as they prepare for one of the toughest opening fixtures of the competition.
