South Africa kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 hopes alive after battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Czechia in a tense Group A encounter on Thursday.

The Europeans appeared on course for their first victory of the tournament after taking an early lead, but a late penalty from Teboho Mokoena ensured the spoils were shared in a hard-fought contest.

Czechia made a dream start, striking in just the sixth minute through Michal Sadílek. The midfielder finished off a move involving Adam Sojka to give his side a crucial early advantage and put South Africa immediately on the back foot.

Bafana Bafana struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the opening half, although Mokoena and Thalente Mbatha both picked up bookings as they attempted to halt Czechia’s momentum. The Africans, however, remained within touching distance at the break despite trailing 1-0.

The second half saw South Africa gradually grow into the contest, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Czechia’s hopes of preserving their lead suffered a setback when Ladislav Krejčí was booked in the 75th minute as the pressure mounted.

Their resistance was finally broken seven minutes from time when South Africa were awarded a penalty. Mokoena stepped up confidently and dispatched the spot-kick in the 83rd minute, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and sparking celebrations among the South African supporters.
