Domingues, captain of the Mozambique national football team, the Mambas, has declared that his side will not be intimidated by the formidable Nigeria’s Super Eagles when they face off on Monday night in AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, Morocco.
Mozambique made history by reaching the knockout stages of the AFCON 2025 tournament for the first time, qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams. Their journey saw them overcome Gabon in the group stage despite losses to Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire.
They now face a significant challenge against Nigeria, a traditional powerhouse who comfortably topped Group C with maximum points after defeating Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. This will be only the second time these two nations have met at the AFCON, with Nigeria securing a dominant 3-0 victory in their previous encounter in 2010.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, a resolute Domingues stated: “The Nigerian team is very powerful, but we will not be intimidated by that. We want to go there and compete because football is 90 minutes; anything can happen.”
He continued, highlighting the team’s historic achievement and their determination: “We know the challenges we are going to have. We know we managed to reach another stage, and we are in a stage where we are still celebrating our qualification. But we know the importance of this game and what type of game it is, and this gives us more strength because we continue dreaming, knowing that this is called a season of breakthrough.”
Domingues concluded with a rallying cry, “So we have to do all we can to continue dreaming, so we will give it our all.”
Apparently, the Mambas are clearly ready to fight for their AFCON dream against the Super Eagles.
