The wife of Abia State governor, Priscilla Otti has emphasised the need to scale up vaccinations against child-killer disease in the state.

The state first lady stated this at a measles-rubella vaccination campaign spotlight meeting at Umuahia, the state capital, noting the possible dangers of non-participation in the programme.

„Measles remain the leading cause of death among children under five years and the introduction of the vaccine can stop 2.5 million deaths in the country, according to available data,“ she said.

Represented by the commissioner for Women Affairs,  Maureen Ahukwa, she urged parents and guardians to embrace the new regime of vaccination for children against Rubella-Measles.

Mrs Otti, noted that the vaccination will mitigate the negative impact of Rubella-Measles on children of vaccination age, assured of the full support of her office for the programme.

The meeting, which had in attendance wives of the local government mayors, also highlighted the need for vaccination against the human papilloma virus-HPV.

The campaign, LEADERSHIP gathered, will focus on anchorage, stakeholder engagement, public enlightenment and education, among other critical areas.
