Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed that his wife played a decisive role in helping him reject a staggering £100 million move to Saudi Arabia last summer, choosing instead to remain at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old Portuguese international and Red Devils captain was the subject of intense interest from Saudi Pro League heavyweights Al-Hilal.
Reports at the time indicated that his agent, Miguel Pinho, had entered into discussions with the club over a potential blockbuster transfer that would have made Fernandes one of the highest-paid players in world football.
However, in a candid conversation on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast, Fernandes explained that the final decision came down to something far more personal than money—a quiet, grounding moment with his wife.
“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club,” Fernandes said. “Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money… there was a lot.”
He credited his wife for keeping him level-headed amid the financial frenzy. “The good thing I have in my family is that my wife is pretty down to earth like me,” he said.
“We’re very aware that we don’t want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids and trying to be as successful as possible.”
Fernandes recalled the simple but powerful question his wife posed when the Saudi offer was on the table: “Have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?”
That question, he said, shifted everything. “That small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me.”
The midfielder, who joined Manchester United in January 2020, has since continued to lead the team as captain, cementing his legacy at the club rather than chasing a life-changing payday abroad.
His decision underscores a growing trend of players prioritising career fulfillment and family values over enormous financial incentives at least for now.
