Nigeria’s N-Youth League Cup (N-YLC) has expanded to 42 participating clubs for the 2026/27 season, up from 23 in its inaugural campaign, as the technology-driven under-19 competition steps up efforts to connect young players with professional opportunities at home and abroad.
The league, founded by Robinson Adakosa, is introducing enhanced player-performance analytics, strengthened regulations and expanded international scouting partnerships as part of its drive to improve youth football development.
With support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), participating state football associations, professional clubs, academies and technology partners, including Wyscout and Eyeball, the competition has grown from 23 clubs in 2024/25 to 36 in 2025/26 and 42 for the forthcoming campaign.
The expansion represents an increase of about 83 per cent over three seasons.
Adakosa said the league was designed to provide young Nigerian footballers with structured competition, professional documentation and greater visibility to scouts and clubs seeking emerging talent.
“For us, this is not simply about organising football matches. We are building a football development ecosystem that connects Nigerian talents to the global football industry,” he said.
“Nigeria possesses an extraordinary pool of young football talent. Our responsibility is to ensure that these players are properly developed, professionally documented, consistently exposed to competitive football and given genuine opportunity to be discovered.”
According to the founder, the competition has recorded progress in attracting clubs, establishing international scouting connections and creating pathways for players seeking opportunities abroad.
He said the league’s growth reflected its founding vision of providing young footballers with a professionally organised competition through which their abilities could be identified and assessed.
“Three seasons ago, we started with 23 clubs and a very clear vision: to create a professionally organised youth competition that would provide talented young Nigerians with the visibility they deserve.
“Today, we are entering our third season with 42 clubs, international scouting platforms, players progressing abroad and increasing recognition,” Adakosa said.
For the 2026/27 season, participating clubs will compete across three regional conferences designed to improve geographical representation, maintain competitive balance and reduce travelling costs.
The regional competition will lead to the National Super 8 Championship, which was won last season by Sporting Supreme FC in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
The league is also planning an All-Star programme in England in November 2026, in partnership with Brooke House College, to provide further international exposure for selected players.
Adakosa said the initiative was also expected to create commercial opportunities for participating clubs, enabling them to reinvest in facilities, coaching and player welfare.
