Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has described Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz as an “intelligent” player, defending him against recent criticism.
Wirtz, who enjoyed a stellar 2023–24 season with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 18 goals and earning Player of the Season during their unbeaten domestic double, has faced a more difficult adjustment to English football following his high-profile summer transfer.
Speaking at a press conference, Nagelsmann addressed the scrutiny surrounding Wirtz’s move to Anfield.
“That was a completely normal situation that affects a young player. He’s someone with emotions and first has to deal with facing criticism. At that intensity, it wasn’t justified,” Nagelsmann stated.
He added, “We grew even closer, had many good conversations where he really opened up. He’s intelligent and very open, and you get a lot back from talking to him. He can take a lot from this phase and come out stronger.”
