Nasarawa State deputy governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, says the state government is not indifferent to the hardshipS being experienced by the people as a result of the US-Iran conflict.
Akabe stated this yesterday in Lafia, the state capital while addressing journalists on the activities lined up to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of the state.
Nasarawa State was created on 1st October, 1996, by the military administration of the late Gen. Sani Abacha and will clock 30 years on 1st October, this year.
The deputy governor, who briefed on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Sule, said while the anniversary is worth celebrating, the government is conscious of the current economic challenges facing the people.
“I need to state that while we are celebrating, we are not oblivious to the temporary hardship we are going through as a result of the US-Iran conflict. It’s not peculiar to Nasarawa State,” Akabe said. “His
Excellency, the governor, being the kind of person that he is, is quite concerned, and appropriate measures are being put in place to ensure that some of these hardships are alleviated as soon as possible. They are currently being addressed, and I’m sure very soon His Excellency will come out with a blueprint on how to address some of these hardships,” he added.
Akabe explained that the anniversary celebration is not merely about marking years on the calendar, but about celebrating the people, diverse cultures, resilience and shared identity of Nasarawa State, and honouring the founding fathers, past and present governors, traditional rulers, public servants, women, youth and citizens who contributed to its growth.
He said Governor Sule approved an inclusive programme of activities developed to mark the anniversary in a memorable and meaningful way.
LEADERSHIP Friday reports that the week-long activities include Juma’at prayers today; commissioning of projects across local governments; interdenominational service on Sunday at St. William’s Cathedral, Lafia; a visit to the correctional facility and Nasarawa Expo 1.0 featuring youth fashion fair on Monday; carnival and food fair showcasing cuisines from the 13 local governments on Tuesday; anniversary lectures by Prof. Attahiru Jega and Prof. Bishop Mike Sule Hassan; a novelty football match between the Executive and Legislature of Nasarawa and Plateau States and a banquet on Wednesday, culminating in the official parade and Governor’s Address on 1st October.
He called on the media to partner with the government to ensure awareness of the celebration reaches every nook and cranny of the state.
