On May 29, 2025, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated its second anniversary in office. The celebration marked the half-time break, just like in a football match, through a four-year journey that began two years ago. The mid-term provided an opportunity to share again how far the administration of President Tinubu has gone, as well as the progress made in steering Nigeria along critical paths of economic recovery and development.
Reeling out the scorecard on the achievements of his administration in 24 months, President Tinubu highlighted the various reforms that have contributed to strengthening Nigeria’s economy through the instrumentality of the Renewed Hope Agenda by his administration. Under the agenda, President Tinubu had pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift Nigerians out of poverty amongst others.
Further on the milestones of his administration so far, President Tinubu paid glowing tributes to the critical roles that the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has played in championing youth empowerment, skill acquisition and job creation initiatives for unemployed Nigerian youths, thus supporting the Federal Government’s plan to empower the next generation, bridge inequality and place young Nigerians at the heart of national development.
President Tinubu in his speech stated that: “Nowhere is placing young Nigerians at the heart of national development more evident than at the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), where the current management is making giant strides. NASENI has embraced a digital-first approach, introduced real-time dashboards, and implemented end-to-end e-procurement through its Unified ERP System-setting a new governance benchmark for public institutions”.
“Through bold, high-impact programmes like Innovate Naija, Irrigate Nigeria, the Asset Restoration Programme, and the Renewable Energy and Innovation Park in Gora, NASENI drives inclusive industrialization at scale”.
“From assembling electric vehicles and reviving idle assets to launching Africa’s most advanced Rapid Diagnostic Kit Factory and training female drone engineers through the NASCAV programme, these initiatives are creating jobs, restoring dignity to work, and opening a future of possibilities for our youths. This is the movement we promised-a government of action powered by the energy and innovation of young Nigerians,” he added.
Now, under the forward-thinking, visionary and innovative boss of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, there is no denying that many activities within the Agency’s mandate areas have translated into numerous technological interventions that have led to this recognition by President Tinubu. Mr. Halilu has not only shown capacity and sagacity, but he has also challenged other government agencies and relevant institutions on how to drive the economy from the right perspective.
Truly, the Agency’s “infinite possibilities” mantra initiated and driven by Mr. Halilu is a testament to this assertion. Since his appointment, Mr. Halilu has spearheaded NASENI’s transformation into a vital force for Nigeria’s technological advancement. He has transformed the Agency to become Nigeria’s Primary Technology Transfer Agency, facilitating the critical bridge between Research and Development and real-world applications.
In less than two years, Khalil has transformed NASENI from a research-based institution into a commercialization powerhouse, with a staggering output of over 35 market-ready products and transforming over 150 capital goods prototypes into commercializable technologies to revamp the Nigerian small and medium enterprise (SME) segment.
As Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NASENI, he introduced the three core principles of Collaboration, Creation and Commercialization (3Cs), ensuring that NASENI delivers world-class products and services and to harness the power of modern science and engineering in order to propel Nigeria’s industrialization agenda.
Under the management team, NASENI is playing a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s manufacturing capabilities, focused on technology transfer and commercialization of R&D efforts.
The new priorities at NASENI include leveraging manufacturing, accelerated technology transfer, and domestic production which align perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the goal of a truly prosperous and technologically advanced Nigeria. Under the Executive Vice Chairman, NASENI has unveiled about 40 commercially viable products including NASENI Smart Irrigation Machine, NASENI Electric Tricycle, Electric Motorbike, Tricycle cargo, Laptops, Smartphones, Street Solar Lamps, Lithium Battery, Microwave, Television, Water dispenser, Air condition, etc. These products are produced by NASENI in partnership with the others who are already in the production field.
NASENI Management is championing a transformative shift within its system, instilling a newfound vision for its identity as a brand. Today, the Agency is widely recognized as an institution propelling Nigeria’s industrialization efforts. Under Khalil’s stewardship, NASENI’s vision has aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for Nigeria.
This alignment has culminated into the development of the NASENI Strategic Launchpad, a product of painstaking efforts, carried out with wide consultation to outline four pillars that encapsulate the agency’s operational targets namely: Enhancing Nigeria’s Manufacturing Capacity, Reducing Nigeria’s Import Dependency through Research and Development, Strategically Repositioning NASENI and Leveraging the Comparative Advantages of Nigeria’s 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory.
The new NASENI vision leverages existing technological innovations through what it called “Leverage Manufacturing” by collaborating with both public and private partners to speed up the production of products and commercialize them. NASENI today stands as a beacon of indigenous technological advancement, aligning with its core mission of fostering needed dynamic Science and Engineering Infrastructure for national progress.
The EVC/CEO of NASENI has articulated a bold vision to fuel Nigeria’s innovation for a sustainable future which has indeed opened more doors to result-based partnerships with national and international communities. Presently, the Agency’s has attracted over Three Billion, Two Hundred and Fifty Million Dollars ($3,250,000,000) investments from both local and international partners.
In pursuit of environmentally and eco-friendly transportation and energy solutions, NASENI has produced Electric Vehicles, Electric and Solar (keke) Tricycles, Electric Motorbike; establishment of Nigeria’s largest Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and reverse engineering training centre in Abuja; upgrade of NASENI Solar Energy Limited (NSEL), Karshi, FCT, Abuja to 50 megawatts plant to produce solar panels of various wattage to bridge national grid gap; Solar Generator, Solar Lighting System; NASENI 300 Watts LED Solar Street Lamp, NASENI Lithium Battery, NASENI Home Solar Solutions, which are in different categories-the Solar farm, radio, charger, etc.
NASENI is establishing additional five (5) Agricultural Machinery Development Institutes (AMEDIs) across the country to complement AMEDI Lafia, Nasarawa State, to reduce importation of Agro-allied technologies, equipment and machinery. It has implemented Soilless Farming technology at AMEDI, Lafia; partnered with Nasarawa State Government and Bobtrack Tractors to establish indigenous tractor assembly plant; introduced Smart Irrigation Pump Machine, is targeting local production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) which would be used for spraying of Pesticides and Herbicides in farms; and building factories for domestic manufacturing of Urea and Coal-based Fertilizers.
In the area of education, NASENI has funded research works of three lecturers from Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) and Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State; awarded N70.5 million grant to six winners of the Developing Engineering Leaders Through Her (DELT-Her), a project under Delta-2 Programme of the Agency; introduced HatchBox for STEM education, manufactured portable Mobile Science Kits for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions.
The Agency has also established Centres of Excellence in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology in Akure, Ondo State and Jalingo, Taraba State; built Universal Bioreactor, Laboratory Bioreactor, Basic Science Tutorial Software, Transmission line trainer, Electronic kits for Technical and Tertiary Institution, built Mobile Standalone 500w Solar Power System Trainer, Mobile Refrigeration Cycle System Trainer, Digital Logic Experiment Kit, Power Electronics Trainer Kit, Logic Gates experimental kit, Oscillator experimental kit, etc for teachers and students to improve learning and academic researches.
NASENI’s contributions to the realization of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda are generally at the socio-economic spheres and also therefore top priority to the leadership of the Agency. Its achievements and initiatives align with the President’s vision for overall national economic growth and sustainable job creation.
The Agency is also focused on reducing import dependency through embarking on innovative projects while ultimately fostering the advancement of the country’s technological landscape. NASENI can therefore can raise its head proudly as its various technology transfer initiatives are ultimately growing into giant achievements that are driving Nigeria’s industrial revival and economic development.
