The National Council on Sports has announced new initiatives to enhance athlete safety through improved insurance policies and to streamline national sporting events. These measures were outlined in a communiqué released after its meeting on Friday at the Kashim Shettima Hall, State Library Complex, Calabar, Cross River State.
The Council acknowledged a presentation on the increasing importance of emerging risks in sports, emphasising the need for comprehensive insurance coverage for athletes, officials, and sports facilities during national competitions. Ensuring proper insurance protection is now considered crucial for safeguarding participants and maintaining the integrity of sporting events across the country.
Additionally, the Council approved a reduction in the number of sports featured at the National Sports Festival. The National Sports Commission, in collaboration with the National Sports Federations and the Forum of State Directors of Sports, has been tasked with implementing this decision.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from across the country to review policies and establish a clear direction for improved sports administration. The Council stated that these resolutions reflect its dedication to enhancing safety standards, promoting efficiency, and strengthening the overall framework for sports development nationwide.
