The National Association of Nigerian Students (NAUS) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive intervention in resolving the lingering crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Deputy National President (National and Campus Affairs) of NAUS, Comrade Dr Meshach Anthony Nwankwo, said the President’s directive to the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, to avert another strike, demonstrated that academic stability remains central to national development.
He noted that the introduction of the Federal Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Portal has deepened accountability across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.
According to Nwankwo, under Tinubu’s leadership, the education sector has witnessed “a paradigm shift marked by fewer disruptions, structured dialogue, and tangible outcomes.”
He said the prompt handling of the recent six-day warning strike, along with the continued success of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), reflects the government’s commitment to student welfare and institutional progress.
NAUS also commended Dr Alausa and the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, for their proactive engagement with stakeholders, which has turned crisis management into what the association described as “preventive governance.”
However, the students’ body warned that some university administrations were allegedly exploiting NELFUND’s intervention to justify unreasonable tuition increases — a move it said contradicts Section 18 of the 1999 Constitution guaranteeing equal educational opportunities.
“NAUS calls for immediate policy action to halt these exploitative practices and protect the integrity of NELFUND,” Nwankwo said.
He further urged state governments to support federal efforts by strengthening bursary and scholarship schemes for indigenous students and ensuring timely disbursements.
The association added that it would engage with the Director of University Education and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, to standardise academic calendars across tertiary institutions, saying such reform would streamline admissions and support the President’s vision for an inclusive education system.
“NAUS remains committed to promoting student welfare and institutional excellence,” the statement added.
“We stand firmly with this administration in building an education sector that powers Nigeria’s future.”
