The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has sensitised students drawn from various secondary schools in Kaduna State on financial literacy as part of activities marking the 2026 Global Money Week.

The programme, held at Sardauna Memorial College (SMC) with the theme, “Smart Money Talks,” equipped the students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions, cultivate a savings culture and develop responsible money management habits from an early age.

During the event, the principal manager of NDIC, Alade Yetunde, stressed the need for young people to understand basic financial principles, noting that financial literacy plays a critical role in personal development and economic empowerment.

Yetunde urged the students to embrace prudent financial practices, including regular savings, effective budgeting and responsible spending, saying such habits would help them achieve their future goals and attain financial independence.

She also explained the role of NDIC in protecting depositors and promoting confidence in the nation’s banking system, assuring the students that deposits in licensed banks are safeguarded.

According to her, the knowledge gained from the programme would empower the students to become financially responsible citizens and future leaders capable of making sound economic decisions.

Also speaking, the special a £dviser (SA) to governor Uba Sani on Student Matters, Yusuf Lawal, described the programme as a rare opportunity for students to acquire practical financial knowledge that many adults did not have while growing up.

He noted that Kaduna State was privileged to be selected for the exercise and commended NDIC for choosing Sardauna Memorial College as the host school for the event.

Lawal said the administration of governor Uba Sani remained committed to expanding access to quality education and creating opportunities for children from less-privileged backgrounds through people-centred policies and programmes.

He further urged teachers to reinforce the lessons from the sensitisation programme in classrooms, stressing that continuous learning would help students understand and apply sound financial management principles in their daily lives.

Earlier, the principal of SMC, Umar Ahmed Lawal, welcomed the NDIC delegation and other guests, describing the programme as a valuable initiative that would positively impact the students.

He said the sensitisation exercise would deepen the students’ understanding of financial institutions and the banking system while helping them appreciate the importance of safeguarding their finances.

Lawal expressed confidence that the knowledge shared during the programme would contribute to raising a generation of financially informed and responsible young Nigerians.

The event featured interactive sessions during which students were educated on savings culture, financial discipline, budgeting and the importance of making informed financial choices.
