The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 46-year-old woman, Adama Inuwa, following the seizure of about 1.1 tonnes of suspected cannabis in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The suspect, who claimed to be from Ogoja Local Government Area, was arrested during an intelligence-led raid on Yala Nkum community on October 4, 2026, by operatives of the agency’s Cross River State Command.

The operation led to the seizure of 181 bags of suspected cannabis sativa weighing about 1,100 kilogrammes, alongside 17.15 kilogrammes of cannabis seeds.

The seizure was described as one of the largest single drug hauls recorded by the command in recent months.

The Command’s media and advocacy officer, ASN1 Sebastian Lebo, disclosed this in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP Sunday in Calabar.

Lebo said the seizure represented “a significant intervention in efforts to disrupt the supply and distribution of illicit drugs in Cross River State.”

Speaking on behalf of the state commander, he said the suspect remained in custody while investigations continued to uncover the possible network connected to the illicit substances.

He added that she “will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the necessary investigations and legal procedures.”

Lebo said the operation demonstrated the agency’s continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and reducing the availability of illicit substances in the state.

He added that removing such a large quantity from circulation would prevent its potential distribution and use, particularly among young people and other vulnerable members of the community.

According to him, the seizure was significant to the state’s public health and security efforts, as reducing the availability of illicit drugs could help prevent substance abuse and support efforts by families, schools and community leaders to build safer communities.

He stressed that operations of this nature highlighted the importance of sustained intelligence-led enforcement and public vigilance.

Lebo urged residents to provide credible and timely information to law enforcement agencies to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and promote peace, safety and lawful economic activities across the state.
