The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed owners of private grid-connected transmission substations to register within 45 days, according to a statement on NERC’s official X handle (@NERCng).

The Order on the Registration and Authorisation of Grid-Connected Private Transmission Substations (NERC/2026/013), effective March 9, 2026, requires operators to secure an Independent Electricity Transmission Network Operator (IETNO) Permit before connecting or operating on Nigeria’s national grid.

NERC said it introduced the framework to bolster grid reliability, safety, and oversight amid frequent transmission line trips flagged by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).
Key provisions include that NISO must submit a full list of existing Private Transmission Substation Owners (PTSOs) to NERC and notify them within five days.

Current PTSOs have 45 days to apply for the IETNO permit.

New PTSOs must obtain permits prior to grid connection, with sanctions for non-compliance.

NISO will install IoT-based metering at interconnection points within 120 days.

Operators must file monthly reports, with NISO handling inspections.

The Order seeks to improve grid stability and ensure compliance with the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry’s Grid.
